Why a slow loading Squarespace website is not good.

For good SEO, a good page download speed is extremely important, as Google takes the page loading time into consideration in its algorithm to determine how your page ranks. This is necessary for user experience, as if your page loads slowly, there is a high probability that your user will leave your site and go elsewhere, which will increase your bounce rate, thereby reducing the average time a user stays on your page.

Several factors determine your web page load time, such as the server, page size, image size, and script size.

What next for how fast my page should load?

It is recommended by Google that your page load time should be 1 - 2 seconds. However, for Squarespace websites, this is a target is difficult to achieve and an average load time you are looking a 3 - 5 seconds.  This is speaking from experience having developed over 300+ websites.

Okay, my website is slow, how can I fix it?

Thankfully, there are a lot of online free tools providing measurement metrics on your page download speed as well as suggesting a number of remedies to increase your page download speeds.  However, the suggested strategies may require a developer and, in some cases, are out of your control as Squarespace is a closed platform.

However, this does not mean that Squarespace is bad for SEO, it simply means that on the server level, certain adjustments need to be made by Squarespace. However, we can concentrate on other strategies which are within our control, such as the page size, image size, and script size.

What to do next?

So your Squarespace website is slow. What can you do to improve the page web speed? Squarespace recommends that your page size be less than 5MB, so the first thing to look at is your media rich files which take longer to load, such as YouTube, Vimeo, and Google Ads. You can reduce the amount of rich media to help reduce the load on the server response.

The next thing to look at these images, and it is recommended to use jpeg images rather than png. Try to reduce the image file size to less than 500kb, before uploading the image to your Squarespace site.

Another culprit is scripts like JavaScript or CSS. As a result, it is critical that you keep this to a minimum and remove scripts that are no longer in use. As a result, whenever possible, avoid using duplicate JavaScript libraries such as jQuery.

For YouTube or Vimeo  also try using thumbnails, as it loads the images first and quickly, while pulling  the information from YouTube or Vimeo servers.

Try not to use too many fonts on your site, 2 fonts should suffice.

Lastly, use AJAX loading if possible with your theme. AJAX only loads the visible parts of the page to visitors, thus making the website load much faster. However, if you have some custom code or third-party plugins on your website, AJAX may interfere with this code. The only way around this issue is to turn off AJAX.
